Many of my friends and I have bought our cars from car auctions. Don't be surprised if I tell you that many of them are in good working condition and some as new as 2 months old. These are all repossessed vehicles seized by banks and government agencies for loan and tax defaults.
So if you want to get a good bargain, you can check out the repossessed car auctions that are happening now.
You should re-write your question to include the area in which your looking to purchase. It would not do any good getting responses from people in New York, NY if you live in California. You would have to spend all your money just to get to NY to pick up the car. So you would end up in NY with no money and no car.

To answer the car question, if there are any independent car lots in your area (not major dealers, just the “corner lots”) you can try there; or look at http://www.autotrader.com – there’s usually a wide variety of cars & prices there.
